THEN & NOW – U.S. Post Office and Customs House at the N.E. corner of 4th & Chestnut Sts.

The High Renaissance Revival building was erected between 1885 and 1889 on the site of the Louisville Industrial Exposition Building (1872-82) and was in service barely more than 40 years. A new Post Office and Customs House replaced it in 1933.

A source of great pride in the 1890s, it seems that most people of the 1940s were glad to see “The 4th Street Eyesore” go and it was demolished in 1942.
